Bryn Alun Camp
PRN: 100384 At the end of a woodland promontory overlooking the River Alyn & the city of Wrexham from the north sits the well defended part-multivallate inland promontory fort, Bryn Alun. Geophys in 2006 & 2008 yielded; ‘some suggestions of roundhouses’. ‘The investigation revealed at least 3 phases of construction. Firstly, an inner dry stone core, probably a box wall, secondly, an outer revetment kerb consisting of large sandstone blocks positioned at the base of the probable box wall in order prevent slippage. Thirdly, a glacial spread covering the inner box wall and possibly the revetment course of stones.’ – HHER ‘The features, structures and deposits from the evaluation yielded little in the way of artefactual evidence other than some 19” century pottery sherds from the topsoil and one flint core, un-stratified.’ – HHER No recorded finds, hence undated* (Scheduled Monument) Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Ordovices or Deceangli *Morphology suggests an Iron Age Site Descriptions from HHER.
