Castle Dikes
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Two miles south of the Thornburough Henges & alongside the A6108 lies the Castle Dikes defended Roman Villa. The villa as well as additional buildings were located within the substantial ramparts. The low sections to the south & east were the original entrances. Partial excavation in 19th century. The main house had three periods of construction. A bath house was also excavated. An additional detached building with two heated rooms and mosaic floor were also found. Road widening north of the Light Water stream in 1929 uncovered further buildings. (No details). Main villa initial construction phase dated to early 2nd century. Destroyed and then rebuilt. Date uncertain. Ramparts constructed in 2nd phase. Rebuilt villa destroyed by fire then rebuilt again. Date uncertain. Site probably abandoned when the legions evacuated the north of England- late 300, early 400 AD. No evidence of re-occupation post 400AD. Site lies 3.7 miles west of the Roman Road, Dere Street.
