Pen Y Gaer
PRN: 663 Overlooking the (river) Afon Duiyn from the NW & west of the village of Castell lies the well preserved multivallate contour hillfort, Pen y Gear. ‘At the entrance (and outside the ramparts on the southern side) there is a cheveaux-de-frise. These are rare in Britain and constitute areas of small upright stones set into the ground to slow approaching attackers.’ - HHER ‘…the inner rampart is built entirely from stone and completely encloses the hillfort while the other banks are built from stone and earth.
