Ravensburgh Castle
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Just to the North of Luton but below Hexton lies the partial contour hillfort, Ravensburgh Castle. Aligned north-south and with a rounded-off rectangular shape the hillfort is built on a chalk bed foundation, as the pits & minor quarries surrounding the site testify. 2015 geophys found evidence of many large roundhouses. Excavations via stratigraphy yielded construction phases starting around 400BC. Finds from a Neolithic axe to Roman coins suggest occupation approaching 1000 years. The site is now heavily wooded and is subject to a future management agreement and a full survey.
