The Aubreys
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Alongside the M1 and Roman Watling Street after it leaves Verulamium (St Albans) is the Iron Age hillfort, The Aubreys. Lying in the grounds of the Aubrey Park hotel this oblate ‘plateau fort’ has been degraded over the centuries but still retains most of its embankments. Excavations made in 2012 when the M1 was widened found Neolithic & Bronze Age artefacts, so the site has been occupied since the Neolithic right up until the Roman invasion. (One of my previous posts covers Verulamium) (Scheduled Monument)
