Wroxeter Roman City
LiDAR – Wroxeter Roman City - Shropshire DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Viriconium Cornoviorum, or Wroxeter Roman City sits alongside the River Severn and is bisected by the B4380 and B4394. In AD 47 a small fort was established just south to the village of Wroxeter, guarding the ford there across the river. Around a decade later the main fortress was constructed a kilometre to the north. After having a ‘chat’ with the local Cornovii tribes they expanded their site to the boundaries that exist to this day. Constructed by the 14th legion. Held 5000 troops & 500 cavalry. Site held circa 240 houses and a huge forum. Evidence for two major fires within city. Forum abandoned in 4th century AD, probably around the time that the Romans were recalled & ‘escorted off the premises’, i.e., the UK. Post-Roman era, the site was almost totally robbed of its stonework. Most of the site remains un-excavated. (Scheduled monument) Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Cornovii Descriptions from Historic England.
