Bindon Hill
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) To the east of Lulworth cove and with earthworks running for 2.8Km is the huge ‘enclosure complex’, Bindon Hill. Mistakenly called The Largest Hillfort in Britain, Bindon Hill is a complex site with a possible hillfort at its west-end. Ancient dumps of material suggest heavy gang working to shore-up the enclosures. 1950’s excavations across the ramparts concluded the construction sequence which began circa 400BC. Subsequent excavations in 1977, 85 and investigation in 2016. Most of the interior has been degraded / destroyed by 19th century ploughing. Sporadic finds include Iron age pot sherds and bowl fragments. Now occupied by the MOD as a firing range so access is restricted due to possible sudden ‘lead poisoning’. Site on the Heritage at Risk register. Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Durotriges (Scheduled Monument) [Any descriptive text is attributed to the Atlas of Hillforts & Wikipedia websites and any associated archaeological descriptions online which will be credited accordingly.]
