Poundbury
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Just inside the borders of Dorchester & to the NW of its centre sits the part bivallate, partial contour hillfort, Poundbury. As you can see from the wide context image, Poundbury lies within line of sight of Maiden castle and the possibly earlier henge of Mount Pleasant. I cannot wait to visit here. The site & area have been occupied since the Neolithic, so we are looking at around 5-10,000 years of occupation. Regarding Poundbury itself, finds include, after its first excavation in 1880: Bronze age huts. Iron age burials. Roman aqueduct. Coin hoard (353AD) Romano British farmstead. Roman cemetery. Buildings & enclosures between 5th & 8th century. WW1 POW camp then a cold war nuclear bunker. Modern housing & industrial estates are now encroaching towards the outer embankments. (Scheduled Monument) Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Durotriges [Any descriptive text is attributed to the Atlas of Hillforts & Wikipedia websites and any associated archaeological descriptions online which will be credited accordingly.]
