Buzbury Rings
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) To the east of Blanford Forum and clipped by the B3082 as it passes the Ashley Wood Golf Club lies the multiple enclosure hillfort, Buzbury Rings. Degraded by the road running right through it and the landscaping of the golf course to the NE the rest has nearly been destroyed by ploughing over the years. First excavation in 1893 and then in 1957. Finds include Iron Age & Roman pottery (2-4th century). Many flint finds including two Mesolithic axes and wattle-marked daub from the inner neolithic causewayed enclosure. Many pits visible from the air & LiDAR within inner enclosure. Scheduled Bowl Barrow in fields to the SW of the site. Labelled as an ‘earthwork’ on some maps, the doughnut shaped ring to the SE entrance may well be another bowl barrow. LiDAR shows ancient field systems to the SW of the site. Last visit by the hillfort study group in 2016. Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Durotriges (Scheduled Monument) [Any descriptive text is attributed to the Atlas of Hillforts & Wikipedia websites and any associated archaeological descriptions online which will be credited accordingly.]
