Sturminster Newton Castle
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) North of Banbury Hill Camp lies the village of Sturminster Newton & just south of the village and the A357 (before you hit The Bull Tavern for a cheeky pint) lies the remains of the inland promontory hillfort, Sturminster Newton Castle. A private road runs along the south edge of the site. Large bank and ditch to the SW. Age range: Prehistoric to Iron Age. The remains of a manor house for the Manor of Newton lies within the site and was acquired by Glastonbury Abbey in 968AD until the Dissolution. Now a farm occupies the site by the looks of things Medieval entrance on SW. Minimal investigations, hence undated. Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Durotriges (Scheduled Monument) [Any descriptive text is attributed to the Atlas of Hillforts & Wikipedia websites and any associated archaeological descriptions online which will be credited accordingly.]
