Chalbury
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Just to the west of Sutton Poyntz & commanding spectacular views across Weymouth Bay sits the contour hillfort, Chalbury. Summit interior depressions may be occupational evidence or shallow quarrying. Stone ramparts. 1st excavations in 19th century and again up until WW2. Finds including human & animal remains, blue glass beads, bracelet, a ring, sling shots, a spindle whorl and pottery yield a construction phase to the early Iron age. There were also Romano British & Samian Ware finds. Medieval strip-fields can be made out on the LiDAR to the northeast of the site. No subsequent investigations since 1939. There are two Bronze Age barrows at the summit. A late Iron Age burial was found in the valley below the fort. Modern quarry on the west side. Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Durotriges (Scheduled Monument) [Any descriptive text is attributed to the Atlas of Hillforts & Wikipedia websites and any associated archaeological descriptions online which will be credited accordingly.]
