Grimes Graves
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) I wondered what Grimes Graves (400 Neolithic flint mines) would come out like on LiDAR? Well, like a shotgun blast to the ground! These are to the north-west of Brandon in Norfolk. At certain times of the year, one shaft is accessible via a ladder and you can go down and see for yourself how they mined flint 5000 years ago. I wonder how many neolithic miners, still holding an antler pick are trapped in branch tunnels that collapsed while they were digging via oil/candle light all those thousands of years ago? Apparently after they had mined-out the first shaft they then filled that in with the spoil of the 2nd shaft and repeated that for the 400 or so other shafts.
