Holkham Camp
This heavily degraded but still visible ‘Hillfort’ is on the salt marshes, just above Holkham in Norfolk. One of the very few still visible in Norfolk compared to the rest of the UK. First described in 1698 as a possible defensive structure against the Danes. The map image is from Andrew Bryant’s map of Norfolk in 1826, but it’s listed as Roman. It is also one of two known forts which correspond to the description by the Roman historian Tacitus of a site where a Roman force, under the command of Ostorius Scapula, defeated a rebellious faction of the local tribe, the Iceni, in AD 47.
