Thetford Castle
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Again, another site I didn’t know existed in an area I grew up in. To the southeast of Thetford’s town centre in Castle Park lies the bivallate Iron Age fort, Thetford Castle. A Norman Motte & Bailey castle sits within its ramparts. There have been sporadic Iron age finds since the 18th century. 1st excavation in 1962. Finds include human bones and a cremation. Additional Neolithic & Bronze age artefacts recovered. Medieval remodelling of ramparts. Norman Castle 12th century (When the motte was built). Castle destroyed in 1173 by Henry II. Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Iceni (Scheduled Monument) [Any descriptive text is attributed to the Atlas of Hillforts & Wikipedia websites and any associated archaeological descriptions online which will be credited accordingly.]
