New Cross Camp
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Southeast of Aberystwyth and just below the B4340 before it reaches the village of New Cross lies the complex defended enclosure, New Cross Camp. 50% has been quarried away in antiquity. The rest of the site has almost been ploughed out. While I was studying this site I found what may be a possible defended enclosure to its west. Called Pant-y-cyrnau on old OS Maps I asked Dr David Howell (Castell Henllys, Pembrokeshire) about its translation that according to Google is, ‘Hollow of the Horns’. David said the translation fits but may refer to the field system, but it was still ambiguous. This has now gone off to DYFED HER to give it the nod, or not… No recorded finds or excavations, hence undated*. (Scheduled monument) Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Demetae *Possible age range 2000-2700BP (Before present) Descriptions from hillforts.arch.ox.ac.uk & Dyfed Archaeological Trust HER. 1st ED OS Mapping via National Library of Scotland.
