Pen y Gaer - Sarnau
[PRN 2239] Straddling an entire promontory 1.5km east of the village of Meidrim sits the very faint promontory fort, Pen y Gaer. The ‘Sarnau’ moniker is from the nearby farmstead. The defensive bank & ditch has been spread over the years by ploughing, especially since the 1960’s when the bank was recorded as being 1.8m high in 1967. No obvious entrance. Just to the site’s east, in 1967 a record was made regarding a spindle whorl that was recovered in 1948 ‘by digging or clearing out a very ancient ruin’. Gotta love those farmers! No recorded finds or excavations, hence undated* (Scheduled monument) Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Demetae *Morphology suggests Iron Age date.
