Lydney Park Camp
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) To the west of Lydney within Lydney Park across the River Severn lies the partial contour hillfort, Lydney Park Camp. Major excavations in the 19th century (started 1805) found the Iron Age hillfort was established circa 100 BC and annexed after the Roman invasion. Area crucial for ironstone mining during that period. Large Roman complex built within the fort. Roman temple erected after 364AD. Final occupation phase 5th & 6th Centuries. Last survey in 2003. Looks like a place I’d like to visit. The estate is open most of the year and you’d get to see the hillfort as well as the Roman temple remains by the looks of things! The Norman motte & bailey remains stand out quite well on the LiDAR. Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Dobunni (Scheduled Monument)
