Horton Camp & Old Sodbury Camp
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) To the west of the A46 at Horton lies the univallate inland promontory fort, Horton Camp. The ditch can just be made-out east of the rampart. Last field investigation 1977. Details lost. English Heritage visit 1984. Geophys in 1998. No finds as unexcavated hence undated. One km south of Horton Camp on an escarpment lies the large multivallate contour hillfort, Little Sodbury Camp (in true English naming conventions). Why not call it ‘Maximus Impactus Fort’? I’d visit that! I digress… Many Roman finds in the interior. It ‘looks’ like a Roman station so that’s no surprise. Some medieval ridge & furrow evidence but this impressive site hasn’t been excavated so it’s also undated. Last field investigation in 1977. Details lost. First written reference in Aubrey’s Monumenta Britannica 1665. Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Dobunni (Scheduled Monument)
