Ambresbury Banks
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) (I’ve posted this one a while back but the LiDAR tile has now been updated so there’s no more holes all over the shop...) In woodland to the west of Theydon Bois lies the univallate hillfort, Ambresbury Banks. 1st excavated in 1881. Last excavations in 1978. Site first occupied date from flint finds in encircling ditch to circa 2000BC. Iron Age dated pottery from 500BC. Medieval tracks pass through the interior. Late quarrying for sand & gravel. Gold Iron age coins made in the reigns of Tasciovanus (20 BC-9AD) and Cunobeline (9 AD - 40 AD) were discovered around the hillfort. Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Catuvellauni (Scheduled Monument)
