Pitchbury Ramparts
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) North of West Bergholt and in fields west of Horkesley Heath lies the remains of the oval bivallate hillfort, Pitchbury Camp. The northern ramparts are hidden in Pitchbury Wood which bisects the site. The southern area ramparts were levelled in 1844. Limited excavation in 1924 & 1933 (details lost) Subsequent excavation in 1973 found Mesolithic & Neolithic flint as well as prehistoric pottery. First Iron Age occupation period 800BC-400BC. Burnt wood at bottom of ditch dated to circa 10BC. Ramparts constructed circa 10AD. Possible medieval kiln in interior. First written appearance in Stukeley’s 1759 Map. Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Catuvellauni or Trinovantes (Scheduled Monument)
