Loughton Camp
In woodland to the northwest of Loughton along the same hilltop as the Ambresbury Banks hillfort lies the univallate hillfort, Loughton Camp. First recorded in 1872. Then known as Cowper’s Camp. Late interior quarrying has lot any occupation features. Excavations of the banks in the 1920’s found many Mesolithic flint implements. Later excavations found Iron Age pottery fragments. Conjectural site of Caesar’s third marching camp in 54BC. Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Trinovantes or Catuvellauni (Scheduled Monument)
