Brakenbury Camp & Drakestone Camp
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Between North Nibley & Wotton-under-Edge and hidden in woodland lies the univallate, partial contour hillfort, Brackenbury Camp. Possible two-phase construction. Chance Bronze Age metalwork finds in 1904. (A Bronze Age ‘saw’ was dated circa 1200BC which may predate the forts construction) Named ‘Becketsbury’ in 1630. Geophys in 1990 (details lost) No excavations but in good condition. I’ve included the Drakestone Camp here as it was on the same LiDAR tile. This site lies north of Brackenbury Camp in Stinchcombe and is actually part of the Stinchcombe Hill Golf Club. It was unknown if this was a hillfort (as it was so degraded) until two excavation trenches dug in 2005 proved it’s provenance. It is now listed as a promontory fort. Possible site of a castle built by Roger de Berkeley in 1153 AD. Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Dobunni (Scheduled Monument)
