Leckhampton Hillfort
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Directly south of Cheltenham and overlooking Leckhampton lies the univallate promontory hillfort, Leckhampton Hill. First excavated in 1925 then subsequently in 1969 and again in 2004 found much burnt material above the stone core leading investigators to conclude that the site was destroyed at least once. First construction phase, circa 500BC. Finds include much Iron age pottery as well as Romano British pottery. Anglo Saxon finds. Medieval finds. Possible bowl barrow within square enclosure to the east. (unexcavated) Site used in WW2 as a radar station. Magnetometer survey found large hole filled with limestone in 1976 but it wasn’t emptied to see what lay beneath, even though a ‘high anomaly’ suggested something deeper… Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Dobunni (Scheduled Monument)
