Carn Brea
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Overlooking Redruth from the SW lies the large (14Ha), complex but part-degraded contour hillfort, Carn Brea. Dating evidence begins in the Neolithic with subsequent multi-phased activity from the Mesolithic to post-medieval. Multiple stone ramparts enclose portions of the summit. Iron age round house bases straddle the two tops. Quarry damage to ramparts to the south. There was a possible site attack in the Neolithic based on 750 leaf arrowhead finds and extensive burnt material. Fragments of 550 South-Western style pottery vessels recovered. C14 date: 3600BC. Many 19th century excavations. 1970-73 excavations confirmed Neolithic dating. First written reference in 1754. Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Dumnonii (Scheduled Monument) [Any descriptive text attributed to the Atlas of Hillforts & Historic England websites]
