Castle Pencaire
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) At the summit of Tregonning Hill which overlooks the coast at Praa Sands lies the mostly destroyed bivallate stone walled partial contour hillfort, Castle Pencaire and its associated Iron Age 'round' & enclosure. West side of site destroyed by mining in 1746 when William Cookworthy discovered China Clay here. This find enabled the production of English Porcelain which was exported to over 100 countries. First written reference by Leyland in 1540. On estate map of 1770 where it was called Loben Rath, from 'Lom Rath' - deserted castle. Last site visit in 1971. Site now has a listed War Memorial. I've included a screen grab from Cornwall's HER to show you how much is going on here. No recorded finds or excavations, hence undated. Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Dumnonii (Scheduled Monument) [Any descriptive text attributed to the Atlas of Hillforts & Historic England websites]
