


DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) On a promontory northwest of Polzeath lies The Rumps. Three ramparts and partially rock-cut ditches bisect the promontory from the mainland. Partial excavations in 1963-67 found thee construction phases beginning 200BC with a large timber gateway. Last period of occupation 1st century AD. Several hut platforms found with spindle whorls, quern stones, whetstones, possible loom remains and a shed-ton of sheep bones. Trading links with the continent postulated due to amphora finds. Site still extant even due to costal erosion. First written reference in 1584 (Norden) who called it 'Pentire Fort'.
