Maen Castle
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Sitting between Land's End and Sennen Cove lies the remains of the Promontory fort, Maen Castle. Degraded by coastal erosion. 60m long massive rampart wall. 2.4m deep rock-cut ditch. Gateway entrance on east-side lined with stone (see attachment). Later used as a post medieval shelter. Ramparts overlie earlier field system. First written reference in 1845. Excavated by Crofts in 1939 and 1949 then by National Trust in 1985. Finds include Iron age pottery. Fort Dated to circa 800-400 BC. Possible Neolithic origins with later use through Romano-British period.
