DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Overlooking West Hill at Ottery St Mary lies the univallate contour hillfort, Belbury Castle. Summit ramparts heavily degraded on purpose in the 18th century. The large embankment/rampart curving round the base to travel north (on the west side of the site) is quite interesting as it looks like they were trying to protect the approach from the river. Pirates! Known as ‘Bigulfesburgh’ on a charter in 1061AD. No recorded finds. Minimal investigations, hence the site remains undated. Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Dumnonii (Scheduled Monument) [Any descriptive text is attributed to the Atlas of Hillforts & Wikipedia websites and any associated archaeological descriptions online which will be credited accordingly.]
