

DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) To the east of the A381 and south of Halwell lies the hillslope fort, Stanborough Camp. Ringed by trees and just southwest of a ploughed-out Norman ringwork & motte, which itself is southwest of the Ritson Barrows (late neolithic/bronze age cemetery) comprising of at least eleven bowl barrows. Possible site of the fort of the ‘Burgal Hidage’ around 918AD. Possible site of the Anglo Saxon ‘burh’ of Healghwille and also the meeting place of ‘the hundred of Stanborough’.(One of the 32 ancient administrative units of Devon). There is a large bowl barrow with a central stone chamber at the SE forts centre which predates the forts construction. A private residence includes part of the forts western side. Chance finds of pottery & coins. Details lost. No excavation records.
