Old Winchester Hill
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Between Meonstoke and Coombe in Hampshire lies the contour hillfort Old Winchester hill or Camp. Investigations revealed over 70 depressions which may indicate hut platforms. The mounds inside & outside represent bowl barrows which indicate a Neolithic or Bronze age date, far earlier by thousands of years to the probable construction of the hillfort circa 500BC. A survey in 1994 established a sequence of development for the site bit its currently undated. Surrounded by medieval field systems. First documented in 1461 as Pastura Vocata Olde Winchester (Gate of the Earth Fort). I’ve added a screen grab below the site to show the VERY interesting field markings just south of Old Winchester Hill… Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Belgae (Scheduled monument)
