Olivers Battery
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Hidden in Abbotstone Down woods to the east of Swarraton in Hampshire lies the univallate, partial contour hillfort, Oliver’s Battery. Fieldwalking yielded Iron Age & Roman pottery plus an Angle Saxon bowl within a burial in the site, which resided in the British museum until its permanent loan to Winchester City Museum. Possible association with Oliver Cromwell’s siege of Winchester in 1645. Area in use in WW1 as a veterinary site for horses. Bisected by the B3046. No excavations, hence undated. Interesting structure to the north when you zoom-in on Google Maps… Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Belgae (Scheduled monument)
