Beacon Hill & Ladle Hill
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Straddling the A34 below Old Burghclere in Hampshire are the Beacon Hill & Ladle hillforts. Beacon Hill is a univallate contour hillfort with traces of over 30 hut circles. Neolithic to late Iron Age finds in 1912. Tomb of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon lies on the SW corner. Ladle hill is regarded as an unfinished univallate contour hillfort with an array of irregular soil dumps and an earlier saucer barrow just outside the main ring. Apparently, this site is the ‘Best example of an unfinished hillfort in England’. I wonder if, when they ever excavate the ditch they will find a load of iron age spades where the workers collectively said “Oh sh*t!” and hastily dumped everything when they saw the Romans appear in the distance marching towards them? The wide context image shows plenty of ancient field systems to the south of both sites. (overlapping square shapes). Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Belgae or Atrebates (Scheduled monument)
