Winklebury Camp
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Just to the east of the Roman road that passes north-south at the west side of Basingstoke lies the ‘complex’ partial contour plateau hillfort, Winklebury Camp. Fort Hill community school has been the proud occupier of the historic site since 1977. Pre-fistfuls of dosh to the local planning officer, the site was partially excavated in 1977 revealing a complex history before the bulldozers moved in. Inception 700 BC. Re-structured 200BC. Possible Roman occupation via Samian Ware finds. First documented in 1290 as Wiltenischebury (Fort of the people of Wilton/shire). As you can see from the LiDAR there isn’t much to go on now. Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Belgae or Atrebates. (Scheduled monument, although not under the modern system. The ramparts are still scheduled but the interior is not…)
