Woodbarn Rath
LiDAR - Woodbarn Rath & Wiston Castle - Pembrokeshire In between the A40 and the village of Wiston lies the Iron age defended enclosure, Woodburn Rath and within Wiston itself lies the medieval motte & bailey castle, Wiston Castle. I noticed these sites on the LiDAR tile when I was looking for the hillfort; Arnolds Hill which now only exists as a cropmark and isn't visible on LiDAR. Even though Woodburn Rath is not a hillfort per-say, It looks like one and I've included it here, as well as Wiston Castle, which was also on the same LiDAR tile. Woodbarn Rath: Partial excavation in 1969 and 1980. Bronze radiant Roman find. Wiston Castle is one of the best examples of a motte & bailey castle in SW Wales. Wizo the Fleming (I LOVE that name!) founded the town in the early 12th century. The Fleming's came from Flanders, Belgium on the invitation of Henry I. The keep dates to around 1220. Fell out of use by the early 13th century as Picton Castle (5km south) rose in prominence. (Scheduled monuments) Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Demetae
