DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Just to the west of Branscombe at the bottom of Kiln Lane by the edge of the cliffs lies the univallate level terrain fort, Berry Cliff Camp. Archaeologists speculate whether the ramparts made a complete circuit around the site due to the amount of costal erosion in the last 2000 years. First written reference in 1747 by the Dean of Exeter recording the site as, “a small encampment on ye cliff of which there are some small remains, but ye mounds are very slight”. First excavations in 1872. Possible slingstone finds. There have been no subsequent investigations hence the site remains undated. Post-medieval hedgebanks are visible running parallel with the cliff within the site. Historic England records a prehistoric field system to the west of the site. Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Dumnonii (Scheduled Monument) [Any descriptive text is attributed to the Atlas of Hillforts & Wikipedia websites and any associated archaeological descriptions online which will be credited accordingly.]
