Just south of Castell Henllys, below the A487 and overlooking the River Nevern lie the holy trinity of hillforts, Castell Mawr, Castell Llwyd & Cwm-Pen-y-Benglog. Castell Mawr is a large bivallate hillfort. (Which strongly resembles the shields used in the film 300!). Geophys & excavation in 2012 (M. Parker-Pearson). Results from survey & excavation can be found with a search of Parker-Pearson and the site's name. Earlier Neolithic & previous henge site theory now disproved (2018) Outer ditch nearly ploughed-out. Tanged iron spearhead recovered in field to the south. Castell Llwyd is a bivallate promontory fort lying SW of Castell Mawr. Degraded by quarrying & ploughing. No recorded finds or excavations. Cwm-Pen-y-Benglog is a bivallate promontory fort lying SE of Castell Mawr. Rock-cut ditches. Heavily overgrown but in general good condition. No recorded finds or excavations. Scheduled monuments.
