Rawlsbury Camp
DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Overlooking Stoke Wake from the southeast lies the bivallate partial contour hillfort, Rawlsbury Camp, also known as ‘Rowlsbury Camp’. I’ve no idea why its spelt both ways… Possible two phased construction. Eastern approach defended by a cross-dyke. First recorded in 1888. Army manoeuvres in 1951 exposed Iron Age pottery sherds. Roman coins and Roman pottery surface finds. Early bowl barrows to the east of the site at Bulbarrow Hill. Last visit by hillfort study group in 2016. (Scheduled Monument) Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Durotriges [Any descriptive text is attributed to the Atlas of Hillforts & Wikipedia websites and any associated archaeological descriptions online which will be credited accordingly.]
